Hair Week: My Messy bun

So it’s the last and final day of my very first Hair Week. I really hope you guys had as much fun as I did testing out all of the different hairstyles I showed you throughout the week. I posted all the links to them below so you can go back and check them out in case you missed one. Smile

For the final look, I’m going to show you guys how to do one of my favorite hairstyles—my messy bun! (Sorry the video is a tad out of focus at times…but you can still see all of the steps.)

I feel like there isn’t really a right or wrong way to do a messy bun. It’s something you can just "mess" with and play around with until you get the look that you want.

Show me a picture of your signature messy bun by uploading a photo to your ElleandBlair.com profile page for a chance to be featured in a Member Spotlight post!

I hope you guys enjoyed Hair Week!

Hair Week: The 5-Minute (Red Carpet Ready) Up Do
OMG can you believe it’s almost the end of Hair Week!? No!! LOL. If you liked these posts, I’ll just have to do lots more of them throughout the year. Smile

Today Travisean is going to show you how to do one of his favorite up-do hairstyles. He told me that he does this for a lot of his celebrity clients for red carpet events, which got me really excited. When he first started telling me about this up-do I was sure it would be a tricky one. Like I thought it would take forever and that there would be a bazillion bobby pins involved. But I was so wrong! Ends up, you can do this up-do in only 5 minutes (or less if you practice)! Pretty sweet, right?

Here’s a video showing you how Travisean did it on my hair:

Video Breakdown:

1.    Twist back each side of your hair.
2.    Secure each side of twisted hair with bobby pins and a hair clamp for extra hold.
3.    Put two sides together into a pony tail. This is the ponytail holder Travisean used (it wraps around and then you hook the ends. Pretty cool! You can buy them at most beauty supply stores.):

Hair Week: The 5-Minute (Red Carpet Ready) Up Do
4.    Next, take the ponytail and twist it into a bun. (You will notice that Travisean pulls the ends to the bun… You will tuck them in using bobby pins at the very end.)
5.    Loosely hold the bun with one hand while you secure the outside perimeter of the bun with bobby pins. Be sure to take the ends and pin those into the bun as well.

Violà! This is the finished product. It’s supposed to look slightly messy and a little undone. I think up-dos look especially pretty when they are a little looser like this. If you’re going to something formal like a school dance or a fancy dinner, add a pretty crystal headband for a little extra hair flair. Smile

Hair Week: Simple, Sassy “S” Curls

Did anyone try out yesterday’s Hair Week hairdo called the waterfall braid? If so, don’t forget to upload pics for a chance to be featured in our Pics + Videos Gallery! Anyway, today Travisean and I are going to show you how to achieve perfect “S” curls. This can be done using a 3-barrel crimping iron or you can go the heatless route and do it with braids.

If you decide to do the braid method, here’s what you need to do: The night before, separate your hair (if it’s damp or a little dirty, it’s better) into three sections and then braid each one. Sleep on it overnight and then pull out the braids and your hair will be crimped. To avoid frizz, use serum to keep your “s” curls looking smooth.

For those of you with a 3-barrel hair waver, here’s what you need to do:

1. Starting with relatively straight hair (it can even be a little dirty—it will help the curl last longer), separate your hair into three sections dividing the front from the back.

Hair Week: Simple, Sassy “S” Curls

2. Then, using a 3-barrel hair waver, begin crimping 3 inch sections of your hair (holding for about 3-4 seconds) starting 1 ½ to 2 inches away from the root and working your way down to the tips.

Hair Week: Simple, Sassy “S” Curls

3. For expert looking waves, make sure you’re consistent with spacing and angle the waver slightly forward the entire time.

Hair Week: Simple, Sassy “S” Curls

I’m obsessed with this look because it works with super squeaky clean hair as well as OMG-dirty hair. It takes about 10 minutes to do depending on how much hair you have but the results are so pretty. I love wearing “s” curls with softer, more feminine outfits to play up the girly vibe.

Are you a fan of “s” curls? If you have a 3-barrel waver, what kind do you have? I’m in the market for a new one. Smile

Hair Week: The Waterfall Braid

Is everyone enjoying this Hair Week series? Today Travisean is going to show you how to do one of the coolest braids I’ve seen in a long time. It’s called a “waterfall braid.” It looks way harder to do than it actually is so watch the video below to learn how to get in on this look:

I love the waterfall braid because it’s really simple but interesting looking too. Let’s just say it’s not your average braid. Smile I would suggest finishing it off with a small clear elastic to keep it looking clean and chic. I would wear this hairdo to school, out with friends or even on days when I just don’t feel like putting a lot of effort into my hair.

Here are a few other photos of my waterfall braid:

Hair Week: The Dirty ‘Do
Posted by Blair Fowler on Jan 24, 2012

Happy Hair Week everyone! So it’s day 3, which means your hair is probably a bit greasy and I have just the hairstyle for you: the Dirty ’Do! Basically, you braid back each side front section of your hair and then braid them together. Here’s a step-by-step video on how to get the look:

Video Breakdown

1. Part hair your hair down the center (or the side works too), and take a 3 inch section from the front of your hair and braid it back so it reaches around the side of your head. Then temporarily secure it with a clip to keep it from falling out. Do this same braid on the other side of your head and secure with a clip.

2. Now it’s time to braid the two braids together.

3. Tie it off with a small hair elastic. I suggest using a clear one. Smile

I love this hairstyle because it’s super easy to do. Plus, it’s great for those mornings when you oversleep and don’t have time to wash your hair. It literally takes less than 2 minutes to do. But the best part is that it looks like you put a lot of effort into it…

What do you think about the Dirty ‘Do? Are you going to give it a try?

P.S. I really hope you guys are enjoying this series so far. If you have any suggestions or ideas for me, let me know in the comments below. Check out my Va Va Voom Voluminous hair from Day 1 of Hair Week here and see my Lovely Loose Curls from Day 2 here.

Hair Week: Lovely Loose Curls
Posted by Blair Fowler on Jan 23, 2012

It’s day 2 of Hair Week and I’m SO excited to show you guys how Travisean transformed my va va voom tresses into lots of lovely loose curls. To get the look, you can either use a curling rod or a curling iron. Both will have the same results so just use whatever you have. Smile No need to go out and buy a curling rod if you don’t have one. Travisean used a 1” curling iron on my hair, but you can use any size depending on how big and loose you want the curls to be. Just remember, the bigger the barrel, the looser the curls!

Take one-inch sections of your hair and carefully wrap them around the curling iron. Keep the curling iron angled down the entire time. Here’s how Travisean did it:

Quick Tip: Since we were using a curling iron, Travisean held the clamp out so it wouldn’t leave uneven dents in the curls. You can see in the photo below…

I love loose curls for almost any occasion—dressed up, dressed down…whatever! Plus, they really don’t take that long. It took Travisean about 10 minutes to curl ALL of my hair—and I’ve got a lot of hair!

Are you going to give these lovely loose curls a try?

Tomorrow I’ll be showing you guys one of my favorite easy hairstyles that’s great for those days when you just don’t wanna wash your hair: the Dirty ‘Do!

Hair Week: Va Va Voom Volume!
Posted by Blair Fowler on Jan 22, 2012

Hi beauties! It’s officially day 1 of Hair Week! Yay! Today I’ll teach you how to get va va voom volume with freshly washed, first-day hair with the help of my beloved hairstylist, Travisean. Voluminous hair is most easily achieved when your hair is freshly washed. For an extra punch, wash your hair using a voluminizing shampoo. This will help lift the hair from the root for optimal body.

1. Rough dry your freshly washed hair with a blow dryer.

Hair Week: Va Va Voom Volume
2. Divide hair into 3 sections, separating the back from the front two sides. Blow dry each section straight. Just be sure to use a large round brush and to lift it from the root.

Hair Week: Va Va Voom Volume
Use clips to keep the back section separate from the front sections.

3. Once hair is completely blow dried, take the crown section of your hair and clip it into loops like Travisean did with my hair in the video below:

4. Let hair set in the loops for 5-10 minutes (you can do your makeup while you wait) and then take out the clips.

5. Take each section and tease it from behind. Be sure to stay close to the root.

6. Finally, rake through your hair and let it fall into its natural part. This will give you plenty of body and lots of volume!
