Feeling Fab: Frilly Fall Fashion

I know December just started, but technically it's still fall (until December 21st) so I thought I'd put this post together... Even though I love all the dark, rich colors that come with fall, I also adore the beautiful textures that can be mixed when layers become a necessary part of dressing, which is always the case during the fall season since temperatures begin to dwindle. Today I put together an ultra girly, non traditional fall outfit that’s perfect for those days when you want to break the routine and wear light colors.

The silky blouse with the frilly neckline retails for about $24, which is a real steal when you consider it can be worn all year round. I would personally layer the cream faux fur vest over the top to add a little texture as it would be a nice contrast to the super silky top. The vest is about $30 and you can buy it here. This ensemble would be great for school or a casual weekend outing because the bottoms are denim, which is another fall fashion staple for me. The jeans I included in the collage are from MANGO but Forever21 has really nicely priced denim too! Since the top and vest combo are super girly I’d wear them with a pair of rugged boots like these and a cute chain wrapped handle bag like this one from ModCloth. Finally, I’d top off the look with a pair of fun earrings like these cute floral heart earrings.

What do you think about light colors for fall?

Eek! I’m so excited for Thanksgiving! Not only do I get to see my whole family and go back home for a few days, I’m also super pumped about the food. It’s the one day of the year where it’s totally fine to just eat your heart out! Ever since I can remember, my mom and I would create cute little cranberry jigglers to set on the table for Thanksgiving dinner instead of just pouring out a can of cranberry sauce. Basically, all you do is open a can of jellied cranberry sauce and then slice the wedge endwise so you have a bunch of little circles of cranberry sauce. Lay out the circles on a cute dish and use your favorite Thanksgiving themed cookie cutter to create fun shapes. I think turkeys and pumpkins are the cutest Smile

I don’t have any photos of the cutters we made last year, but I actually found one online that looks just like the little jiggly cranberry cutters my mom and I make every year:

Flavorful Fall: Jiggly Cranberry Cutters

Aren’t they cute? This is a really simple little kitchen project you can to do help get the table set for Thanksgiving. Give it a try and let me know what ya think!

Speaking of cranberry sauce, has anyone giving the cranberry lip trend a try yet?

TGIF: Get Festive
Posted by Blair Fowler on Nov 18, 2011

It’s almost Thanksgiving! It’s one of my favorite holidays since I get to go home and see the family. Anyway, today I thought it would be fun to show you guys a few cute ideas for making your room or home festive for fall!

1. Hang a wreath like the one Elle and I bought at Target. We hung it on our front door so we can both enjoy it. I love it because every time I come home I’m reminded it’s fall and it makes me want to go cuddle up with Teddy or bake more pumpkin spice muffins

TGIF: Get Festive

2. Take some cardboard and cut out the letters that spell “Thanks.” Then paint them with glue and sprinkle your favorite fall colored glitter onto the letters. You can arrange the letters over your bed, fireplace or even put them in your bathroom. Cute right?

TGIF: Get Festive

3. If you have a houseplant (it can be anything from a potted tree to a little pot of roses), make it a thankful tree! Just take some colored construction paper and cut it out so it’s shaped like a luggage tag. Then hole punch the top and write a little something you’re thankful for onto the tag. You can either make a bunch of these tags or have your family join in. To hang them from the tree, tie on a little piece of string through the hole punch. How cute is that?

TGIF: Get Festive

Give one of these decoration ideas a try over the weekend and let me know how it turns out!

Halloween Fun: Ahoy Matey!
Posted by Elle Fowler on Nov 1, 2011

Halloween Fun: Ahoy Matey!

I hope everyone had a happy Halloween! I ended up going out with my girlfriends over the weekend and dressed up as a cat the first night and a sailor the second night. I might have had a little too much fun because I ended up yelling “WHERE’S MY SHIP?!” most of the night… Needless to say, it was the best Halloween. Smile

Halloween Fun: Ahoy Matey!

Funny little side story: I have some awesome sailor shoes I got in college (I was a sailor once in college too) so I decided to pull them out from the depths of my closet for this year’s costume. It’s weird because I remember them being HELLA TALL in college…as in I didn’t know if I would be able to wear them all night. I remember being so proud of myself when I got through the whole night of partying and walking around without taking them off. It’s all about the little things, right? Anyway, the funny thing is, when I pulled them out a week ago I realized they are not tall at all! They’re like 3 inches! HAHAHA! Oh how things change…

Flavorful Fall: Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Around Halloween, one of my favorite things to do to celebrate the fall season is to whip up some yummy toasted pumpkin seeds! My Mom and I have been making them ever since I was a little girl and it’s been something I look forward to every fall. Sometimes we make them salty, sometimes we cook them up sweet—but no matter which way we make them, they’re always super yummy!

I recently made some candied pumpkin seeds and they came out so delicious that I decided I had to share the recipe with you guys. Luckily, it’s very easy and you can probably do it with minimal adult supervision.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh pumpkin seeds (make sure you get all the pumpkin gunk off them if you’re using the seeds from your pumpkin)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (or you can use cinnamon)
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions: Pre-heat oven to 250 degrees. Mix together all of the ingredients in a bowl and make sure all of the seeds are coated. Then spread the seeds onto a greased baking sheet and pop them in the oven for about 45 minutes, stirring them occasionally. Once they look nicely golden, take them out and let them cool all the way and then enjoy!

Pumpkin seeds are a healthy snack and a great way to enjoy the fall season. I like to treat myself to a handful of these candied pumpkin seeds with a yummy cup of tea during the week.

Are you going to give my candied pumpkin seeds a try?

Are you going to go trick-or-treating this year? You best believe I am! I went last year and I’ve actually never skipped a year since the very first time I went with my mom and Elle as a little girl.

I know I’m kinda pushing it age-wise, and some households look down on teenage trick-or-treating. However, I think I’ve mastered the art of “mature” trick-or-treating by following a foolproof strategy:

The secret for older, teenager trick-or-treating is to wear a really silly costume, have a fun and cheery attitude and most importantly, a smile! So easy. Either wear a head-to-toe animal onesie like a goofy penguin or floppy duck costume, or go like something really funny like the cow from Chick-Fil-A. This is definitely time to skip the "sexy" costumes and opt for one that's more fun. You can also pull this off by going as something super scary, like the guy from Scream or the little girl from The Ring. The whole point is to show that you're having fun and spending one night a year letting the little kid in you shine through.

Halloween Fun: My Trick-or-Treating Tips

As long as you are having fun and you have a bubbly, respectful demeanor, the grown-ups who answer the door won’t be able to resist your charm! If you follow these tips, no one will care how old you are, even if you’re pushing twenty!

Another trick that I learned from my Mom is to get a flashlight, put brand-new batteries in it, turn it on and stick in in my loot bag (we always used pillowcases to carry our candy). My Mom used to always do this for Elle and me when we were kids, and I still do it to this day! Nowadays, they even have Halloween-themed flashlights or glow-sticks that you can use instead of a regular old flashlight.

Halloween Fun: My Trick-or-Treating Tips

I think it’s very important to be safe while trick-or-treating, now matter how old you are. Crossing dark streets is dangerous for everyone, so make sure you incorporate a flashlight or glow stick into your Halloween outfit. This one even has a built-in whistle, in case you somehow get separated from your friends or if you see a child in danger.  Talk about responsible!

So there you have it—a few of my best tips for having a fun and safe Halloween! I know it’s hard to believe, but I don’t think I will ever stop trick-or-treating. I mean, it’s the one night of the year I can get Kit-Kat bars for FREE! Yummm!

What’s your favorite Halloween candy? Mine’s obviously Kit-Kat bars Smile

Halloween Treats: My Creepy Crawly Mud Pie

You guys know how I LOVE me a cup of chocolate pudding right? And how I seriously cannot live without Oreos? Well, I have to say that one of the reasons Halloween is my very favorite holiday is because I get to have one of my FAVORITE treats ever. So what is this deliciousness I speak of? My (somewhat homemade) Creepy Crawly Mud Pie! It has Oreos in it, pudding along with a few other surprises…

Here’s how I like to make it:

First take a pretty glass or plastic cup and put a scoop or chocolate pudding into it. I like to use those short acrylic cups you can get at party stores—they kinda look like martini glasses, but without the stem. After putting a scoop of pudding into the cup, mash up some Oreos in a plastic bag and then put a handful of crumbles on top of the pudding so it looks like dirt. Then place a couple gummy worms on top. Repeat these steps a few more times until you have filled the glass. I like to make it so the top layer has extra Oreo crumbles and a few gummy worms popping out. And there you have it—easy, creepy, crawly, chocolately Halloween goodness! Yum!

What’s your favorite Halloween treat?

Halloween Memories: Blair the Rock Star

I’d like to think I looked this cute in my costume… LOL.

So how did you guys like my pink elephant story? LOL. It’s a Fowler family favorite… Anyway, I have another favorite Halloween costume memory that I want to share with your guys today about my days as a “rock star.” LOL.

When I was a little kid my mom took me to Target and let me pick out my own costume. I thought I was such a diva so I picked this one called “Rock Star” (that’s what it said on the package!). I’m sure it was $19.99 or something like that but it came with everything: “leather” pants, platform sandals, a black tank top with pink feathered trim and the words “Rock Star” written in pink glitter across the front. Sweet. But the best part about the costume was that it came with a zebra-print, blow up electric guitar and headset! Talk about fierce…

When I put on my “Rock Star” costume I just thought I was totally awesome. Now that I think about it though it was pretty silly. The shoes were basically made out of cardboard and the “leather” pants – yeah – not so much. Sadly, the whole costume was destroyed by the time I finished trick-or-treating. The sandals were all soggy and broken down (it was horrible) and the blow up guitar was flat as a pancake. And worst of all, I had pink feathers all over the place and the plastic pants were seriously losing their shape. And you best believe this was NOT a good look. LOL.

Needless to say, I LOVED that costume. I wish I had a photo to share with you guys, but I don’t Frown Anyway, I just thought I’d share another goofy Blair story today…

What was your favorite costume as a child?
